Current abortion debate in Parliament

A tiny proportion of abortions take place after 20 weeks and those women that do request them are often the most vulnerable women in the most difficult of circumstances. For more information on the reasons to retain the current 24 week time limit visit the fpa website

At the end of 2007 the report of Parliament's Science and Technology Committee on abortion was published. The committee reported on evidence from a wide range of professional groups and found that there have been no scientific developments to justify a reduction in abortion time limits.

In addition to defending the current time limit on abortion, leading sexual and reproductive health groups believe that women's health would be best served by reforming the law to ensure more straightforward access to abortion by: removing the need for a second doctor's approval; allowing appropriately trained nurses and midwives to carry out first trimester abortions; and ensuring that UK law is extended to Northern Ireland where women currently have no access to legal abortion. Voice For Choice is a coalition of agencies working together to extend women's reproductive rights.
