Course Title: Decisions and Dilemmas
This course is aimed at anyone working with young people in education, health, youthwork or social care settings: for those working with young people in group work and one to one. A typical training group will include school nurses, sexual health nurses, youth workers, learning mentors and teachers. The day aims to provide practical tools for teaching about abortion and supporting young people with pregnancy decision-making.
Course aims:
- To raise awareness and understanding of teenage pregnancy and abortion so that professionals can facilitate constructive discussion of the issues and equip young people to make and act on informed choices
- To enable practitioners to provide clear information and supportive advice about abortion to young people
- To facilitate reflection of personal attitudes and values and how they impact on professional practice
Outcomes - by the end of the course participants will:
- Be able to explain the importance of addressing abortion with young people and professionals
- Have considered their own and others' view points on pregnancy and abortion and reflected on how these might influence their work with young people
- Be better able to take a client focus
- Be able to use a range of exercises to facilitate discussion of abortion with young people in group work
- Feel more confident in delivering abortion education with Sex and Relationships Education
- Have considered practical ways of supporting a young person to make an informed decision about pregnancy and feel more confident in doing so
- Understand key policies relating to young people, abortion, confidentiality and the law
- Know about abortion provision and understand abortion in relation to physical and emotional health

Course Title: Pregnancy Choices and Challenges
A one day specialist training course on supporting vulnerable pregnant young women and their partners, particularly those with care experience, to make informed choices about pregnancy and abortion. Specially suitable for social workers, looked after children nurses, foster carers. This day includes the core 'abortion: decisions and dilemmas' course as well as additional modules to address issues specific to vulnerable young people.
Course aims:
- To raise awareness and understanding of teenage pregnancy and abortion so that professionals can facilitate constructive discussion of the issues and equip young people to make and act on informed choices
- To enable practitioners to provide clear information and supportive advice about abortion to young people
- To enable professionals working with young people in and leaving care to facilitate constructive discussion of the issues and to support a process of informed decision-making
- To facilitate reflection of personal attitudes and values and how they impact on professional practice
- To promote understanding of the unique needs of young people in and
leaving care in relation to pregnancy decision-making
Outcomes - by the end of the course participants will:
- Have considered their own and others’ view points on pregnancy and
abortion and reflected on how these might influence their work with
young people

Course Title: Reducing repeat conception
This 2-day course is aimed at all those working with young people in education and health settings. It was designed to meet demand from local areas concerned about high rates of repeat teenage conception and repeat abortion, and draws strongly on up to date research on the causes of repeat conceptions and on recommendations aimed at reducing them. It includes the core learning outcomes of 'abortion: decisions and dilemmas' training as well as new modules on strategies to integrate contraceptive counselling into maternity and abortion care.
Course aims:
- To raise awareness and understanding of teenage pregnancy and abortion so that professionals can facilitate constructive discussion of the issues and equip young people to make and act on informed choices
- To enable practitioners to provide clear information and supportive advice about abortion to young people
- To facilitate reflection of personal attitudes and values and how they impact on professional practice
- To raise awareness of the causes of repeat unintended conceptions and identify effective practice to help reduce its incidence
Outcomes - by the end of the course participants will:
- Be able to explain the importance of addressing abortion with young people
- Have considered their own and others' view points on pregnancy and abortion and reflected on how these might influence their work with young people
- Be better able to take a client focus
- Be able to use a range of exercises to facilitate discussion of abortion with young people in group work
- Feel more confident in delivering education around pregnancy decision-making and abortion within Sex and Relationships Education
- Have considered practical ways of supporting a young person to make an informed decision about pregnancy and feel more confident in doing so
- Understand key policies relating to young people, abortion, confidentiality and the law
- Know about abortion provision and understand abortion in relation to physical and emotional health
- Understand the causes of repeat unintended pregnancy, repeat maternity and repeat abortion
- Have considered effective practice to help young people reduce risks and implement a contraceptive plan
